A skin patch test is a way of identifying whether a substance that comes in contact with the skin is causing an irritation or inflammation of the skin called contact dermatitis. Commonly referred to as ezcema, contact dermatitis is caused by either irritant contact or allergic contact.
Patients suffering from dermatitis should undergo a skin patch test to determine if the dermatitis is a result of a contact allergy or simply an irritant reaction. Allergic contact dermatitis is specific to an individual and to a substance. When the substance comes in contact with the skin, a rash or irritation will develop.
HOW A SKIN PATCH TEST WORKS
Dr. Drozdowski will examine the existing irritation and evaluate potential causes for its development, discussing with you use of cosmetics and toiletries, occupation, lifestyle, and more. After the initial discovery phase, the doctor will determine which allergens should be tested for and a patch test will be performed.
During a skin patch test, small amounts of the allergen are placed on the skin in patches for a period of 48 hours. Upon removal of the patches, Dr. Drozdowski will rate the reaction to each allergen, ranging from simply an irritant reaction to severe allergic reaction.
The results of the skin patch test will determine which substances your skin has an allergic reaction to.
